Old & In the Gray

With their roots firmly planted in bluegrass history, Old & In the Gray reunites Peter Rowan, David Grisman and Vassar Clements from the original bluegrass boundary-breakers, Old & In the Way. Sparked by a performance at one of David Grisman's Birthday Bash concerts in San Francisco in the late 1990's, these three musicians of the highest bluegrass caliber called upon veteran banjo player and vocalist supreme Herb Pedersen to fill the slot left vacant by the late Jerry Garcia. Since then, music festivals across the country have been seeking out and presenting this 'special bluegrass reunion.' Now the time has arrived for their premiere Acoustic Disc recording, Old & In the Gray.

Just as Old & In the Way brought an expanded spirit and repertoire to the bluegrass genre, Old & In the Gray continues in that same tradition. Entwining the contemporary with the classic, tracks include John Hartford's "Good Old Boys," Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho & Lefty," the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women," "Bill Monroe''s "On the Old Kentucky Shore," the Stanley Brothers' "The Flood," and Flatt & Scruggs' "Let Those Brown Eyes Smile at Me." Vassar's fiddle is as vivacious as ever, Dawg's mandolin creates its' usual intricate balance of scintillating leads and propulsive rhythm, and Herb's stellar banjo picking and tenor singing ignite tunes like the Louvin Brothers‚ "Childish Love," while Bryn Bright keeps the beat pumping on upright bass, preserving the great feel established by the late original member John Kahn. Peter's voice is as golden as ever while the band harmonies soar on John Duffey‚s "Victim to the Tomb" and Rowan's own "Rainmaker" and "Meadow Green." Old & In the Gray can surely attest to bluegrass music's coming of age, arriving at a time of mass cultural awareness, reminiscent of the effect of the first Old & In the Way album from 1975. Produced by David Grisman at Dawg Studios, Old & In the Gray features the sonic clarity that has become an Acoustic Disc trademark.
