Press Release:

Like just about every musician who was paying any attention at all in the '60s, the Grateful Dead was heavily influenced by the work of Bob Dylan.

Bob Dylan contributed to the Grateful Dead's catalog almost from the very beginning - "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and "She Belongs to Me" entered the repetoire in 1966. Starting in the mid-'80s, and accelerating after the Dylan-Dead tour of July 1987, the Dead included a Dylan song in almost every show.

Postcards of the Hanging gathers ten of the Grateful Dead's Dylan covers, recorded live over a span of nearly 20 years.

Garcia's affinity for the ballad is exemplified by "She Belongs to Me" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," while Bob Weir hits the energy peak with "Alll Along the Watchtower" and a crackling "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again." Bassist Phil Lesh contributes a droll reading of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues."

As a special bonus track, the CD will include an excerpt featuring the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan from the rehearsals that preceded the 1987 Dylan-Dead tour. [note from Geoff: the song is "Man of Peace" featuring both artists]

Compilation assembled by David Gans.

Special two track bonus disc included in the first run featuring "Queen Jane Approximately" and "Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)." [note: bonus disc no longer available]
